That's just how the famous painting has it, so you can see all the people there. that painting, painted by Leonardo da Vinci, was made 1500 years after the fact.
Really though, in the actual last supper, people didn't have chairs and tables as they do today. back then, rather than sitting at a table, they reclined forward on large pillows, leaning on their left elbow and eating with their right hand. this is show by how, in the Gospels a harlot is said to approach Jesus while he was eating and wash his feet with her hair and perfume---certainly difficult to do if He was sitting at a conventional table.
So there was Jesus and his disciples (and perhaps a few others) sitting all around a central area with the food, not lined up as in the da Vinci painting.
Oh for goodness sake.
It's an artistic representation. It's a very common device to have people sitting all on one side of the table. They even still do this today on television.
If you really want to get technical about the historical accuracy, they wouldn't have been sitting in chairs around a table, anyway. They would have been reclining on cushions around the table.
Yes, but painting in fresco puts certain limits on how a scene can be represented.
Also, it would not have been a European style table, it would have been more like scenes in movies where Bedouins are sitting on rugs on the floor, leaning on an elbow, eating from a low table.
Actually the painting, while not historically accurate, does show a pretty good example of a sater. Exept Jesus would have probably have been on the end of the table, and thats the only change.

they did not use chairs only couches , the tradition was to lie down and eat and sleep when required .
