What is the best way to finish a solid pine dinning table?

My husband and I finally agreed on a new dining table and chair set from Ikea. the chairs are natural pine that already have a clear laquer on them but the table is completely unfinished. He wants to put it together and start using it the same day we buy it even though our current set isn't going to bite the dust tomorrow. I told him that I wanted to give the table a very light stain and then clear coat it to match the chairs or at least just put the clear coat on it before it gets used for the first time, and for that matter before it is put together. my husband is impatient and not exactly the best at assembling things like this, even though I am the one to hide the assembly guide before I go to put something together, though I do check that all the pieces are there before ditching the instructions. I want this table to stand up to our 2 year old and stick around in the family for at least 10 years. we came to a comprimise yesterday.

Ohh...sounds pretty! I'd go with just a high quality sealer and leave the wood natural. It'll darken over time anyway.

If you want the table to hold up lightly sand and apply several coats of poly lightly sanding between each coat with a 220 grit sand paper.

Ok that was a bit misspelled.. But if you want a "Dining Table", you could always try craigslist.com and go to Vancouver, you can find deals. As for stores.. Just look for a furniture store like the Brick.

base coat is to protect ur nails from turning yellow and kinda like to make it stronger.you put it on b4 putting the nail polish or just put it on as a clear coat.
