Replacement ideas for coffee table?

i am an avid yard sale hunter and i got these great end tables for $10. i love these things. well they had glass in them, but they broke when we moved. right now i have some really, really thick cardboard cut to fit that i covered with fabric for now. i thought about replacing the glass. but what i have found so far is the glass is thick starting at 1/2 in. the table is most likely 1/4 in thick. i also though maybe buy some thin wood, like plywood (i dunno if that comes in a variety of thickness) and get some tile i like and grout it. but i think then the middle would stick out. i really love these end tables. so my question is any more suggestions on this thing? i would say the total table is 2 feet and the glass part is 18" so there is a 3 in border of wood around the area. but the tables aren't perfectly square. i don't know where my measuring tape happens to be. any suggestions? thanks so much!

Have you thought about painting the wood? Leave the ends of the table as they are, or sand and stain them a different colour then what you use in the middle you can paint a contrasting colour!
I had an old toy box that had a cracked top, so i sanded it back, stained it a dark brown, almost black and then painted the new top part the same red as my feature wall. it fits in perfect with all the other furniture and is as much a decorative item as functional piece of furniture.

Have to use tempered glass in the table and that stuff costs a pretty penny. (In fact a lot of pretty dollars.) Cover the tables with plywood and then glue the tiles to the top. do not use the stuff that you put a tile on the floor with. It's too heavy and will cause it to sag. after you glue the tile in with the proper spacing you can then grout it.
