How do I keep my dog from putting her paws up on our kitchen counter & table?

I have an 8 month old German Sheppherd and she'll put her front paws up on the kitchen counter and table looking for food scraps, this drives me nuts and I want to break her of this behavior. I've been told setting mouse traps is effective but that seems kind of extreme.......though I'm certainly considering it unless I get some really good suggestions from this inquiry

You can put mouse traps on the counter. They won't hurt the dog, just startle her when they snap. They work on couches as well. You could also keep a squirt bottle of water on hand and squirt her on the muzzle when she puts her paws on the counter and tell her "No" very firmly. Yelling is not going to be effective, mom dogs don't yell. They "scruff". You can try getting her by the scruff of the neck, firmly, but not hard enough to make her yelp when she puts her paws on the counter. give her a gentle shake (like mom would) and tell her "No" firmly. I have found all three methods to work very well, it just depends on what works for your dog.

i have a nine month old male German shepherd and mine used to do the same thing. i cured this problem by telling the dog 'no' and nudging him till he got down. When he got down i gave him a treat and praised him. after a while she will get the message and get down for the treat, then after a while she will not need a treat but will do it. this will take a while but if you stick at it you should see a difference. it is important that you do not give the dog any food when she puts her paws up or she will keep doing it. German shepherds are a persistent breed and you need to keep at it. good luck.

Mouse traps are dangerous for dogs!

What you need to do, is get a handle on this. Get some of her favorite treats, and when she isnt on the counter or she gets off when you say "OFF!" give her one, she should ketch on...

Whenever she is on the counter, say "OFF!!" and point your finger at her. if she doesnt get off gently but firmly push her off, not that she falls, just so she gets off of it, and then say good girl! and give her a treat, as long as u dont lure her off with a treat, this should work. You should never lure dogs from something bad with a treat or toy. They just think that they get a treat for doing something bad or w/e they are doing. Positive doesnt work by itslef, it needs some negitive to work!

Best of luck!

OKAY ,,DO THIS MY DOG DID THE SAME THING ,,TAKE a NEWS PAPER FULLED IT UP ,,,WHEN IT JUMPS UP SMACK IT REAR ,,ITS NOT GOING TO HURT THE DOG,,,THE SOUND OF THE PAPER IS WORSE THEN THE SMACK...THE START TEACHING IT TO STAY OUT OF THE KITCHEN AREA,,MY DOG WONT CROSS. THAT AREA NO MORE ..I SHOW THE PAPER AND HE GOES BACK TO THE COUCH,,YOU GOTTA LET IT KNOW YOUR THE BOSS

You can lay a piece of carboard on the counter and put empty soda cans on the edge. When your dog goes up there the cans will fall and scare him. the spray bottle is good when you are right there too.

i had the same problem when my gsd jumped up on the counter what we did was put his front paws back on the ground and say no so eventally he learned the command no and never bothered to jump up agaun after a little while

lol. samck her nose w/ your hand and say no, down. smack her w/ a rolled up newspaper. spray he will water. put pepper on the table and when she does it the pepper will go up her nose

get a old coffee can (the metal kind) and fill it with change.
when she jumps up shake it.
it works for seeing eye dogs =]
